What is the Bardathon?A day-long festival in which high schools come together to put on a Shakespeare play. Each school presents one rehearsed and memorized scene.Who participates?Public and private high schools from around the Richmond region are invited to register.Sometimes the team is composed of students taking an upper-level theatre course; sometimes an after-school drama club prepares a scene; sometimes a group of interested students will take the initiative. All groups must have a school sponsor, but a teacher doesn't necessarily have to direct the group.
What play will be presented?Bardathon 2012 will feature The Tragedy of MacbethWhat do we hope to accomplish? We feel that one of theatre's major benefits is its ability to unify. In contrast, theatre for high schoolers often has a strong competitive element, either among actors competing for the same roles or between schools at theatre competitions. Our goal is to bring diverse students together to share in the joy of playing some of the richest and most interesting characters ever written in the English language. It is also our hope that neophyte Shakespeare players will be inspired by their fellows who have had more experience in the matter, and so be given ideas for the next time around. Where is it?The Gottwald Playhouse at Richmond CenterStage, our producing partner. When is it?Bardathon 2012 takes place March 23, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.Do all scenes need to have the same setting? No, each school is free to pick its own time and place for their scene, as long as it makes sense within the context of the play. Schools supply their own props, set pieces and costumes.Because different actors will be playing the same character from scene to scene, we provide an identifying costume piece that indicates which character they are playing. This helps audience members follow the story. Can I see what this is all about?Yes! Visit CenterStage's Vimeo page to view videos from the first Bardathon in 2010. Bardathon is filmed and streamed live over the internet. Schools, classes, or community groups can watch the performance in real time. Contact Richmond Shakespeare for details. How much does it cost?Participation in Bardathon is free, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, the Richmond Chapter of the English-Speaking Union. How can my school participate? Please contact Angela Lehman-Rios, Bardathon Manager at angelalehmanrios@yahoo.com. | ||
