Residencies

Three days…or three weeks!

Our residencies use physical and written exercises, and classroom performances to explore Shakespeare's works in more depth. They can be customized according to the needs of a particular class or school, or tied to our Richmond Shakespeare Theatre performances . Showcasing Shakespeare's plays as blueprints for performances, residencies give students the chance to explore flexible points of view, and help them to understand how chance discoveries or creative decisions can affect the staging of a single scene or an entire play.

Residencies can also focus on using Shakespeare as a "touchstone" for the exploration of a variety of subjects. In 08-09, Thanks to a Partners in the Arts Grant, Richmond Shakespeare and Sabot at Stony Point School partnered for a year long program in which the entire school would devote themselves to Shakespeare related projects, as well as studying various subjects- storytelling, architecture, cooking, writing music, dance, among others- through the lens of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan era. The year culminated with a performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by the 6th,7th and 8th graders.(see blog by Kerry Mills, parent and coordinator -  http://sabotatstonypoint.org/node/473  )

Residencies create a kind of engagement with the text that silent reading never can.
