This class requires a lot of physical movement and “on your feet” time, so it may be beneficial to begin exercising in preparation. It is not for the faint of heart.

Rapier and Dagger are often the first weapon an actor trains in when working toward skill in stage combat, and will hopefully be the first in a series of weapons certification courses offered at Richmond Shakespeare. This class will be an intense hands-on course in the use of rapier and dagger for the stage. Stage weapons will be provided for student use during class. Students will receive instruction in safety, weapons handling, working with a partner, and acting technique in order to effectively use these weapons in live theatre. After at least 12 hours of instruction, students will be offered the opportunity to present their work in an adjudicated performance. Certification will be available to those performers who meet the standards of Dueling Arts International. Students are welcome to seek advice from the instructor regarding their ability to certify at this time.

Actors should bring water to drink, as well as a bag lunch. Please wear comfortable clothing in which you can move.  No jewelry, skirts or dresses, even for the men.  Gloves with grip are Highly recommended, closed toed shoes with grip are required. No high heels, sandles, or barefeet. Actors must be able to commit to all hours of instruction. Any student not meeting the instructor's safety guidelines will be removed from the course and will not be able to receive a refund.

Matt McKay is an Associate Instructor of Theatrical Combat with Dueling Arts International.  He has fight directed a number of playing including The Illusion, Pscyho Beach Party, and Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet).  He is a certified stuntman with the United Stuntmens Association and an actor combat with the Society of American Fight Directors.  He is finishing up his Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre Pedagogy at Virginia Commonwealth University.  Next year he hopes to teaching at a small liberal arts college in the Midwest, closer to his home state of Michigan.
